Volunteer Spotlight: Gabriella and Meredith Padgett

Inheritance of Hope has been blessed by many incredibly passionate and dedicated volunteers.  In fact, Inheritance of Hope’s mission of inspiring hope in young families facing the loss of a parent cannot be realized without them!  Our “Volunteer Spotlight” series is a way to celebrate these most selfless members of our Inheritance of Hope family. The Padgett sisters, Gabriella and Meredith, are great examples, serving at 5 Legacy Retreats® each.

How did you become involved with Inheritance of Hope (IoH)?

Deric Milligan is our uncle so we have always known about Inheritance of Hope and have watched it grow. Before the May 2012 Legacy Retreat®

Support Group - May 2013

I have been volunteering for Inheritance of Hope for almost four years.  In those years of witnessing amazing moments, my eyes have been opened to the significance of support and encouragement.  I want to focus on the loving assistance that we volunteers strive to accomplish for these families living with a parent who has a life-threatening illness.

I do not take lightly

An Instrument of Peace

St. Francis of Assisi largerEarlier this week, my family and I were walking on the grounds of a chapel in St. Augustine, FL.  While strolling through this beautifully manicured piece of our nation's history, I came across a statue of St. Francis of Assisi, who is highly revered in the Catholic church.  Next to the statue was a prayer that is often associated with St.Francis.  As I read the prayer, my heart was immediately grabbed by how closely this prayer parallels the heartfelt service offered by Inheritance of Hope volunteers.

Inefficient and Undignified, part 2 - August 2012

After recalibrating their regard for the holiness of God and the ark, David leads Israel by bringing the ark into Jerusalem.  David knows how to make an entrance!  2 Samuel 6:12-19 and 1 Chronicles 15-16 depict an exuberant celebration.  There are many instruments making music, singers, sacrifices, offerings, free food, and a scantily clad king.

When I consider purchasing something new whether it be a camera, television, car minivan, or refrigerator I find myself asking everyone I know for their opinion.  I also have been know to search online for reviews and comments to help me make my decision. This also applies to services like carpet cleaners, lawn maintenance, house painters, etc.

In this day and age it is as easy as a click of the mouse to get thousands of opinions on these things and more.

Until We Meet Again

DSC_0114DSC_0111IMG_7943

It is hard to believe we have only known each other 3 days.  These past few days have really bonded us all together in such a wonderful and special way.  The children created some very special relationships with our volunteers and staff.  I heard more then one of them say they "don't want to leave" (Gage) and "wish they could stay together longer." (Jordan and Justin)  This children are leaving with some amazing memories with their families, some wonderful new friendships with the volunteers and other family members and some tools to help manage and work through their personal struggles and fears.

A Beautiful Day in NYC

DSC_0132

Another beautiful day in the city.  We enjoyed another magnificent breakfast at the Hotel Novotel at 8:30 this morning.  While we ate, we watched four guys change a large billboard.  It was impressive to watch, especially at eye level!  The weather is warmer today.  As I write, it's 64 degrees - toasty considering it's almost December.

After breakfast, everyone headed up to 73rd for our meeting time.  Parents had a great session talking about legacy.  Linda Stoll, the counselor who skillfully facilitates these sessions said "the session went fabulously and the parents did great work."

Ready for Times Square

Our first Times Square Legacy Retreat begins tomorrow!

Night view from Hotel Novotel

Night view from Hotel Novotel

After months of anticipation, the Times Square Legacy Retreat is almost here!  Our volunteers have arrived from all across the country, and we all met tonight to make our final preparations.

I feel very blessed to have so many volunteers returning after serving at previous Legacy Retreats.  Eight people volunteering this weekend are experienced pros, and I can't imagine doing these retreats without them.  Their understanding of what to do and how and when to do it is invaluable, and they make everything so much fun.

We also have a couple of newcomers to our volunteer team, and I am excited about the energy they bring.
